About the Toolkit

Business Owner Toolkit is written for people who are running the business and also doing the admin, which in a small company is usually the same person. It assumes you are capable but busy, and that you would rather understand a rule than be sold a service that handles it.

The four parts

How it is written

Chapters are written against primary sources — the IRS, the SBA, FinCEN, your Secretary of State — and link to them. Where a rule varies by state, we say so and point at the body that decides, rather than giving a national answer that is wrong in half the country. Where a figure moves year to year, we describe the mechanism and tell you to check the current number instead of printing one that will quietly go stale.

This is general information, not advice

Nothing here is legal, tax or accounting advice, and reading it creates no professional relationship. Several chapters cover areas — entity choice, classification, reasonable compensation — where the right answer genuinely depends on specifics we cannot see. For those, the chapter tells you so and suggests when a professional is worth the fee.

Corrections

Rules change, sometimes substantially and with little warning — the 2026 change to federal beneficial ownership reporting being a recent example. If a chapter no longer matches what the agency says, tell us and we will fix it against the source.
