Current position

This site does not currently carry affiliate links, sponsored content or paid placements. If that changes, this page will be updated first, and any compensated content will be labelled on the page itself — not only here.

How paid content would be labelled

A policy page nobody reads is not a disclosure. If commercial arrangements exist, they will appear in three places:

What compensation would not change

A commercial relationship does not buy a recommendation, a position, or the removal of a drawback. The rules in how we write — no invented evidence, no fabricated testing, no manufactured urgency — apply to compensated content exactly as they apply to everything else.

This matters particularly in this subject area. A lot of small-business content is published by companies selling the filing being described, which is why so much of it overstates urgency and complexity. Where we say something is simple and free — an EIN, for instance — that is not a position anyone could pay us to change.

Why this matters legally

The Federal Trade Commission requires material connections between an endorser and a seller to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, and that obligation sits with the publisher. We would rather over-disclose than rely on a reader inferring it.

Advertising

We do not currently run display advertising. If we do, it will be visually distinct from editorial content and will not be presented as a recommendation.
