This is a reference site. There are no accounts, no logins, no purchases and no newsletter, so there is very little to collect — and we would rather describe exactly what there is than publish a generic notice covering things we do not do.
What we collect
Analytics
We use a web analytics service to see which chapters get read and how people arrive. It records pages viewed, approximate location derived from IP address, referring site, and browser and device type. We use it in aggregate to decide what to write next, not to identify individuals.
Server logs
Our host keeps standard request logs — IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent — used for security and diagnosing faults.
Anything you send us
If you email us, we keep the message and your address for as long as it takes to deal with it. We do not add correspondents to any list.
We do not sell personal information. We have no mailing list and no account system, so we hold no passwords. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Cookies
The site sets a cookie to remember that you dismissed the cookie notice, and the analytics service sets its own to distinguish repeat visits. You can block or delete cookies in your browser; the site works without them.
Third parties
Our analytics and hosting providers process data on our behalf. Chapters link out to agencies and reference sources — once you follow a link, that site's practices apply rather than ours.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information, or to opt out of its sale or sharing — noting that we do not sell it. Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states with comprehensive privacy laws, and people in the UK and EEA, have such rights under local law. Email us to exercise them.
Given how little we hold, a request usually resolves to confirming we have nothing beyond aggregate analytics and any correspondence you sent.
Retention
Analytics data is retained per our provider's configured period. Server logs roll over on a short cycle. Correspondence is kept while it is relevant to the matter it concerns.
Changes
Material changes will be reflected in the date at the top. Continued use after a change means the updated notice applies.
